Assignment: Hispanic Recipes



Your task is to use your blogs from your final paper on Latino immigration to present different recipes from different Spanish-Speaking countries. The recipes must be derived by the same countries you did your immigration report on.You must also answer the following questions for this assignment. Make sure to use the resources below. 

1.      What is the brief history of the food you chose?
2.      What are its ingredients?
3.      How is the food prepared?
4.      When and where is the particular food served?

Guacamole


Ingredients

  • 1 sliced lime
  • 3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 medium onion, diced
  • 2 diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
  • 1 minced clove garlic 
  • 1 bag of tortilla chips

Preparation

1.  Uncoat the avocados, discard the scooped avocado pulp and place the remains onto a bowl
2.  Drain, and reserve the lime juice into the bowl
3.  Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. 
4.  Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. 
5.  Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve with tortilla chips. 

Arroz con Leche

Arroz con Leche 
(Spanish rice pudding) is one of the most popular desserts in Latin America. This dessert is super easy-to-make and super delicioso! 
Ingredients 
  • Milk -- 4 cups (Some countries in the Caribbean use coconut milk)
  • Short-grain rice -1/2 cup
  • Cinnamon stick -1
  • Orange or lemon peel (optional) - 2 strips
  • Salt - pinch
  • Raisins -1/4 cup
  • Sugar -1/2 cup
  • Butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Vanilla - 1 teaspoon

Preparation

  1. Place the milk, rice, cinnamon stick, orange or lemon peel and salt in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Immediately reduce heat to very low and simmer, stirring often and scraping bottom, for about 45 minutes.
  2. Add the raisins and sugar and simmer for another 15 minutes. Stir often to keep from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla. Adjust sugar to taste and serve hot or cold, sprinkling the top with some ground cinnamon.

Morir Soñando

Morir Soñando (Die dreaming) is a popular beverage of Caribbean countries such as Dominican Republic and Venezuela, usually made of orange juice, milk, cane sugar, and chopped ice. 

Ingredients:
2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice
2 cups milk (Prefer whole milk but skim milk is fine)
1/4 cup sugar 
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup of crushed ice 

Preparation:

1. Mix sugar, milk  and vanilla extract and stir until all the sugar has dissolved. 
2. Refrigerate until very cold. Add the ice to the milk and stir. 
3. Slowly pour the orange juice in the milk, stirring constantly. 
4. Serve immediately.
